New Video: Support our Troops and Veterans
Check out the new PeaceTakesCourage video. This is a re-edit of a video that I created back during election season 'o6, but I've redone it because the poor treatment of our returning troops and Veterans has only gotten worse.

Watch Video: Quicktime | Windows Media Player | YouTube

So often we hear the Bush Adminstration and war-hawks say: "support our troops." But what we don't here about is the fact that the VA has been short-changing mental health programs when PTSD problems are growing. Or the fact that the Bush Administration has proposed 10 BILLION dollars in Veterans health care CUTS over five years. Enough is enough! Support our troops - Bring them home and help them get the benefits they deserve!

Excellent, though brief.

More money is spent in one day to fight the Iraq war than is spent in a year to support veterans benefits. A soldier is trained to kill and is taught that he is less than a man if he shows any remorse or fills any guilt. When he returns home he has to deal with the trauma of having killed and having witnessed horrors none should see. There is no excuse not to have a program in place to help a combat veteran adjust to civilian life. No wife or child should have to deal with a wartorn husband or father without proper support. As in the movie "A Few Good Men" you want us on that wall, but you don't want to deal with the truth.
Robert @ Mon, 12 March 2007 07:51
ydd, you really don't know what you are talking about. The military does have programs to handle combat stress and programs that help soldiers transition into civilian careers. So please get your facts straight before you make these kind of statements.

Hey Jay, good for you boy, hang in there for us old soldiers. The truth is the VA budget has been cut lately, but they got a damn good computer system. Some good people work at the VA clinics but they are limited. My doctor is an RN, not quite the same as an MD.
ydd @ Mon, 12 March 2007 08:50
To Sgt. Barnes, I appreciate your service. It is true that attempts have been made lately to do better in our culture, in both the areas you mention, but we still have a ways to go and progress will certainly stop if criticism stops. Thank God you will be treated like a hero. I have two son's that have served in Iraq, Somalia and Bosnia, and they too as you, have seen things your glad your family will hopefully never see. AS an NCO, you like them are probably a lifer and part of that culture. I am Damn glad men like you and them serve. Some of us did our three years and got the Hell out. Some of your men are now back in civilian life. They have to depend on the VA and you might have to also oneday. I support Ava's site because I am against this war, but when I was in Nam I didn't like peaceniks, so my heart if not my mind is with you, GOOD LUCK.

angry They've figured out what to do about injured veterans - send them back to Iraq. Hey, politicians - a lot of people are getting tired of waiting for impeachment. Meh.

My brother just left for Iraq. A senseless war perpetrated by stupid people. . . Lots of big talk (it's cheap!) but no action from this administration. Health care? Who cares?
ydd @ Thu, 15 March 2007 12:15
I care about health care!!!!!

You have more knowledge of what is going on than people five times your age.
Emmett @ Sat, 17 March 2007 10:42
Young lady you are the greatest and you have a great grasp of what is going on in our country.I just watched you on CNN and you are more intelligent about what is going on in DC than any of the Reps we have elected to work for us. Keep up the good work!!

Good for you and your web site. I call this the CIA administration. CORRUPT, INCOMPETANT,& ARROGANT. The worst one ever. It makes Nixon look like a choir boy.
daveso @ Mon, 26 March 2007 07:54
my brother is a 30 year vet of the US Army, now retired..2 tours in Iraq...has several injuries, not life threatening, over this time, and he has stated more than once the problems with the health care. Yes, there are programs for when the troops come home, but not adequate to handle the stress. How many returnees have commited suicide?

I'm a Vietnam era vet myself..spent 14 years in the military. I've been in quite a few VA hospitals..the places are abysmal.

Unlike the poster above, I supported the peaceniks myself then, and fully support the cause for peace now.

Ava...I think you're a very special person. Keep up the great work.

Ava, I read about your site in the Chicago Tribune today and have spent the last hour going through your work. I do have to say I am really impressed with your work but something struck me. If we leave Iraq now are the children going to stop dying? I don't believe our troops or our government are making car bombs and IEDs. Is there going to be peace if we leave or just peace for us? My mother always told me "if you make a mess, clean it up." I hated cleaning my room but it is still the right thing to do.sad
will webster @ Wed, 02 May 2007 03:20
Very good work. I'm quite amazed by the quality of thought and common sense.
I have a concern about Tim's comment, saying if the US leaves Iraq children are going to still die. This is true, but they are also going to die if the US stays.
Someone needs to be thinking and talking about what the US is going to do about the terrible mess it has made in Iraq, and about how to deal with the children whose lives have been ripped apart.
This needs to be part of the anti war movement; coming up with solutions.
Thank you Ava, you refresh my faith in the American people, and in the young.
You go girl!

Keep up the good work and tell us more about the people who are opposed to this war. I keep hearing accusations if one is against the war we are against the troops. I would like to know how to fight this crazy reasoning.
